Abstract

Rail Track Diagnostics Based on Mobile Laser Scanning Data

Railway companies use track condition parameters as a basis for diagnostics and asset life cycle management. The fast and efficient capturing of the parameters becomes more and more important due to tight schedules and the high use of the tracks. Especially, for narrow gauge railways there is no appropriate system for the fast and efficient capturing of the track condition parameters.

iNovitas AG has started the project “Track Quality Asset Management” to develop a measurement system, which can be used flexibly and efficiently on different railways. To reach this goal, the PPS scanner of IPM is used. A special calibration and data processing workflow has been developed. Now, we are able to extract the parameters track type, track gauge, superposition and the axis with an accuracy of 1 to 2mm while driving up to 60km/h.

The developed algorithms and processing workflow were verified by a real measurement campaign of the whole Rhätische Bahn railway network. Data capturing, our processing workflow and the verification process of the extracted data will be presented in detail.
